The essential oil of Damask rose and its main characteristics.
The Damask rose is a plant derived from the wild rose Rosa canina. Originating from Persia, this flower is now found in several countries such as Syria, Morocco, Bulgaria, and Turkey. Since the Middle Ages, the petals of this flower have been used in the preparation of ointments and other skin remedies. To obtain the Damask rose hydrosol and essential oil, the petals undergo a double steam distillation process. The yield is low, hence its high price.
Damask rose essential oil is obtained after distilling approximately five tons of petals, which equates to 3 to 4 million flowers.
In skincare, Damask rose essential oil is referenced under the I.N.C.I. designation "Rosa Damascena Flower Oil". It is an ally for skin showing signs of aging due to its regenerative action and its antioxidant properties, it helps to limit premature cell aging, and brings radiance and brightness to the complexion. Its soothing action helps to calm skin inflammation and redness.
What precautions should be taken to use this essential oil with absolute safety?
Firstly, like the majority of essential oils, it is contraindicated during the first three months of pregnancy. After this period, it is advisable to seek a doctor's opinion before using it. It is also not recommended for children under 3 years old.
Next, this essential oil contains several biochemically allergenic and highly concentrated components such as citronellol, geraniol, and nerol. These natural compounds can pose a risk of allergy in certain sensitive individuals. Therefore, it is always advisable to perform a skin tolerance test in the crook of the elbow 48 hours before using a skincare product with Damask rose essential oil.
Finally, it should never be applied undiluted to the skin. The Damask rose essential oil must be diluted to a maximum of 5% in a carrier oil.
Take note! Susceptible to oxidation, this essential oil should be stored in its amber bottle and sealed airtight before being placed away from light and heat.
